Language packs

A language pack is the model file the engine translates with. One pack covers every language in the picker, in every direction, so there is one download, not one per language.

Size, and why

The pack is 1.4 GB, and the install is about 1.5 GB with the checker; the install prompt shows the exact total for your device. That is the smallest we can make it without changing what it produces: a smaller pack would translate worse, and we do not trade quality for download time (the one recipe rule). It is downloaded once and reused; nothing is fetched per translation.

The checker (125 MB) scores each draft sentence. The desktop app also fetches the engine binary itself: a few MB on macOS, about 25 MB on Windows and Linux where it carries its own graphics backend.

Where it lives

• Browser. In the browser's private storage for traxlate.com. It survives closing the tab and restarting the computer; it does not survive "clear site data" for this site, which removes it like any other stored data. Private or incognito windows discard it when they close.
• Desktop. In a `.traxlate/engine` folder in your home directory, next to the engine and the checker. Removing it from Settings deletes the folder.
• Phone. In the app's own storage. Removing the app removes the pack.

Installing

Press Get your language pack on the home box, or Install in Settings. The progress line shows the percentage, the bytes so far, and an estimate of the time left measured from the current rate rather than guessed. A download interrupted by a lost connection resumes where it stopped when you press the button again, and every file is checked against its expected size before it is kept.

Reinstalling and removing

Settings shows what is installed and its size, with a remove action ("Remove pack" in the browser, "Remove language pack and engine" on desktop). Remove, then install again, is the fix if a download keeps failing at the same point. Removing the pack does not touch your glossary, history or settings.

Memory

While translating, the pack is loaded into memory. Devices with 4 GB of memory or less install a more compact form of the same pack (about 1.1 GB) automatically; the install prompt shows the size that applies to your device, and the app never falls back to a server. Closing the tab releases the memory; the apps release it after a few idle minutes and reload on the next run, which the status line reports as "Loading the translator".

Is there a pack per language?

No. One pack, all languages, all directions. The picker shows exactly what it covers.

Will the pack update itself?

Nothing is downloaded behind your back. A new pack version, when there is one, is announced in the changelog and offered as an install you start yourself.
